About La Leche League of Rochester Central
Leader: Beverly (Bev) Brewer
Bev has seven children ages five to twenty-two.She has been homeschooling for ten years. Besides being an LLL Leader she is an RN and recently became an IBCLC. She loves crafts, reading, watching PBS, and walking when the weather is nice. Bev is currently implementing the GAPS diet for her family with healthy gluten free meals.
Meetings: The fourth Thursday evening each month. They have consistently about 6 moms every month and have had as many as twenty. Many mothers bring a sibling as well. A couple mothers often bring dinner or snacks. They always open with introductions and start with questions. When questions are answered they discuss the meeting series topic for that month.
Most interesting meeting topic or discussion:
Bev made cards with questions for the month of February on self-care. Each mother took turns picking a card and answering. It challenged them to think about a subject they did’t usually think about.
What do you do for fundraising?
Selling memberships and as an Area Chapter we raised money from donations from the Live Love Latch event. They are collecting for a garage sale this spring.
What do you do for memberships? Do you sell them? Do you give "gifts" or perks?
Bev always encourages mothers to "give back" but doesn’t mention membership every meeting. The Group offers $25 and $40 memberships and gives away a Thank You gift with each membership - either a swag bag or a notebook journal/pen bundle. For home visits Bev says “my door is always open if they want to come to me” and if they want a visit in their home she tells mothers she reserves that right for members.
Do you have a lending library?
We have about ten books in the library. Only members can check out books, but we have given a book or two out to a regular attendee (nonmember) on occasion. Baby Led Weaning and Sweet Sleep are the most popular books.
How do you promote the Group? We advertise monthly meetings on five different Facebook groups and on Bev’s personal Facebook page. Mostly the mothers spread the word by telling their friends and the Group grows.
