The following from the Letter of Good Standing, the official document that LLLI issues to each LLL Group, also applies:
The La Leche League entity named above has been placed in the Federal tax-exempt group exemption for La Leche League International, a 501(c)(3) corporation, and is in good standing for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2015. This makes the above named group eligible to accept tax-deductible donations as a 501(c)(3) charity and/or to open a non-profit bank account. The appropriate fees/assessments have been paid, a copy of the Annual Financial Report has been or will be submitted to the Finance Department, and annual reports to the IRS are being filed.
Group dues are $20 per fiscal year and are due on April 1. Groups that hold multiple monthly meetings are expected to pay Group dues for each meeting. For example, LLL of Chatham-Spencertown is a Group that has two separate Series Meetings each month, but a single treasury and some overlap of Leaders. This Group pays $40 in dues
Leader dues in New York are $70 per year. This amount is based on financial assessments done annually by LLLUSA. Each Area Network in the United States receives an assessment bill based on the number of Leaders in the Area Network. La Leche League of New York’s share of that assessment bill comes to $67.50 for each Leader—just about all of the dues that you pay. Only $2.50 remains with LLL of New York to help cover expenses like mailings, reference materials, and this Area
Leaders who have been accredited during the past fiscal year receive an invoice with a prorated dues amount, since accreditation fees cover a full year of Leader dues.
These fees may be a hardship for some Leaders and Groups. Remember, your Group treasury can be tapped to cover all Group and Leader dues. To raise money, you can encourage Group memberships and hold fundraising events. In addition, LLL of New York has set up a restricted fund that that helps Leaders in difficult financial circumstances meet their obligations to LLL. If you are a Leader in financial need, please contact Helen McCullagh, Area Coordinator of Leaders (ACL), to discuss your situation. And if your means allow, please consider joining the many Leaders who have donated to the Leader Fund by adding $15 to your own Leader dues. It’s a great way to lend a hand to your sister Leaders.
It is my hope that a successful Area Conference in November will allow us to reduce the Leader dues for New York Leaders in the 2015-16 fiscal year.
Another obligation, the Annual Financial Report, is a fairly simple form for Groups to complete. In it we show income and expenses from April1 to March 31, the Group’s bank balance, and its EIN number. It is important to file these reports every year to protect your Group’s non-profit status. I am in the process of re-creating the form (in the aftermath of a hard drive failure in March), and when I have completed it the file will be uploaded to the Area website.
The IRS 990 form must also be filed every year. Robin Stanford, Associate Finance Department Administrator of LLL Alliance for Breastfeeding Education, has been kind enough to file these federal forms for Groups in New York for the past few years. If your Group’s contact information changes, please let me know and I’ll forward the update to the appropriate people.
La Leche League of New York can now collect payments through a PayPal link in the Leader pages of the LLL of NY website. Using PayPal incurs a fee, so you’ll notice that your Leader dues will cost a few dollars more if you choose to pay them online. Groups that have PayPal accounts are able to make other payments, such as Group dues and membership fees, through the PayPal “shopping cart.” Group PayPal accounts are fairly easy to set up.
The Area website’s homepage now allows mothers to purchase membership in LLL of NY via PayPal. I encourage all Leaders to sell memberships through your Group, so that you may hold on to your portion of the member dues.
Dues for memberships sold on the Area website will remain entirely with the Area. The Group portion of these memberships will be pooled to help lower Leader dues in future years. We hope to target this feature to mothers who visit our website and want to support the statewide mission of LLL of New York.
If you are a Leader who is not currently affiliated with a Group, please encourage the mothers you encounter to support La Leche League with membership.
