I’m so happy to hear about the interested mothers in your Group. One of the best resources for you and the mothers to start with is the LLL Alliance Web site, especially the supporting Leader page and the Leader Applicant page. These two pages contain links to many of the documents that you will need should the mothers become
If you have not done so already, you’ll want to start by sharing with each of the mothers the documents found under the Leader's Pre-Application Packet heading. Discussing these items with each mother will help you both in completing the Application Form and the Leader Recommendation Form, which you will also find in the packet.
Both of these Web pages guide you to one of the newest items from the Leader Accreditation Department (LAD), the Leader Applicant’s Resource Kit (LARK). LARK is a syllabus or curriculum of application work. It has an introduction, separate chapters about each application part with corresponding resources, and a chapter about final paperwork and the transition to leadership.
LARK is an optional resource, but it has already helped many Applicants become Leaders in less time than in the past. It even includes a six-month application plan for Applicants who would like to finish their applications quickly or don’t know where
A Few Changes
When you were a Leader Applicant, you may have written a personal history that included a full birth story along with your breastfeeding and mothering experiences. This is no longer necessary. Leader Applicants are now asked to explore these experiences in the context of La Leche League philosophy.
Of course, an Applicant has the option to write as much as she would like on any part of the personal history. But many find the prompt questions on the second page of the "Personal History of Breastfeeding and Mothering" document (found in the first chapter of the LARK) to be helpful as they structure their writing. For example, it’s okay for an Applicant to talk about her birth experiences in the context of the concept about birth. She does not need to do any additional writing on that one aspect of her mothering experience.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions. I'll be on the lookout for each mother's Application form and fee ($35 if the Leader Applicant needs a copy of Leader’s Handbook, $15 if she already has a copy), and your Leader Recommendation form for each mother as well. The checks can be made out to “LLL of NY.” There is also an option of paying via PayPal. Please let me know if any of the mothers would be interested in this alternative and I will send you more information about it.
Thanks again, and I hope we don’t have to deal with too much more snow—I’m ready for spring!
